Authority: the most underrated source of citations
Why a perfect page can stay invisible, and how to spot the links that are really missing.
Flawless content that nobody cites stays invisible. AI relies on sources it already knows: Wikipedia, Reddit, YouTube, industry directories and comparison sites, trade press. If your client appears nowhere in them, there’s no reason to name them.
For a real construction client, AI cited Wikipedia 27 times and YouTube 16 times on its topics. The client had no link from either — even though its site was technically flawless.
The audit’s two analyses
The authority platforms you’re missing
The tool compares the sources AI actually cites on your topics with the domains that link to you. Anything on one side but not the other is a documented gap — not a hunch.
Links your competitors have and you don’t
The link profile of the sites AI cites instead of your client is compared with your client’s. A domain that lists several of them but not your client is a qualified target. Social networks and low-value directories are filtered out.
How to work each platform
- Wikipedia: never earned by publishing it yourself. You first need coverage in sources Wikipedia accepts — start with two or three trade press articles.
- Reddit: genuinely useful answers in industry threads. Direct promotion is penalized, but AI cites these discussions heavily.
- YouTube: AI reads the written description, not the video. Give it as much care as the footage.
- Yell, Trustpilot, G2…: a complete listing (services, area, photos) and customer reviews.
Each target becomes a task in the Action plan, with the approach specific to that platform.
